After installation, what will be the grand total of ram?

a year ago, i'd say that would be a bit excessive, but such an amount fits right in nowadays. was this upgrade necessary to run some kind of game or engineering program, or was it just done for kicks to speed things up in general?
it was done because i was having problems running photoshop when i opened 50 pictures in it. plus my harddrive was getting full and i had problems since i also didn't have enough ram.
512 wasn't enough, so i just got a gig instead of another 512.
