DC Day 1 (5/7/11)

Jeans: Express
Shirt: Loft
Jacket: NY&Co
Left Shoes: Famous Footwear
Scarf: Relay for Life
Right Shoes: Brookes
Necklace: Sears
Well today I traveled to DC. A conference starts tomorrow morning at 7:30 AM so I had to get here today.  We tried to get here as early as possible to have sightseeing time.

The rental car place opened at 9 so we were thinking that Mallory would pick it up at 9 and then head out at that time to get to DC at 1:30ish.

There were a few of us carpooling. I was driving to Mallory's and she was getting the rental car and we were leaving from there.  Then Hilary was carpooling with us so I was picking her up on the way.  Therefore I was driving 1:30 prior to getting the rental car. Then it was roughly 4:30 of driving after that.

Well I got to Hilary's at 8:15 (like we planned).   But then we didn't arrive in DC until 4.  A few things caused delays.
The main delay was our rental car getting a flat tire.  It was a big ordeal. Roadside assistance is supposed to be covered. It wasn't. Then the tow truck guy charged even more. We get to expense it to work but still it is the principle of it all.

Once I was settled in my room it was 4:30.  Then we did some figuring and decided to head to Arlington National Cemetery. We went via metro but it was still a ton of walking there.

Then we took the metro back. I left Mallory and Lauren and I went to Pot Belly's.  They were closed so I walked to a different location that was opened later.  I ate it there (alone!) and was still hungry so I stopped and got some munchkins on the way back.
My feet were so very tired so I took the metro back. Well that still involved walking. That involved being more confused and getting turned around.  I got back at 8:30 and was so tired. As I got back I got a text to go out. I'm too old for that.  I wanted to sleep right away but here it is 11:00 and I'm awaking typing a post and I was doing emails and loading pictures.

While out my low battery light started blinking. It actually started blinking early.  Then my cell battery also almost died.

7:30 is going to come early tomorrow. I bet I'll be more tired than those other people that left at 9 to go out and party. I'm old.
Also I got back to my room and did this to my pants. They weren't my sitting pants and were a bad choice for what to wear for a day I'd be sitting a lot.  I did eventually shower and put on my yoga pants.

How was your Saturday?

Colors

Since my Color Rotation Challenge ended I tried to wear colors instead of neutrals. I tried to not wear as many reds.  It turns out I wore a ton of blues.
Here is a summary of what I wore since Color Rotation Challenge ended. I reordered them to make it like color rotation but didn't like it so now it is all random.  I feel like I wear a ton of skirts but looking at this, it barely looks like I wear any. I think that it is out of work clothes, I wear skirts a lot but I almost always wear jeans on the weekend.

The outfits with pants are never my favorite. I like jeans better than dress pants.  I really like belts.

What do you think? Have I worn a lot of variety or a lot of the same over the past month?

Friend Friday: Shoes

This week Katy's questions are about Shoes.
1.What is your go-to pair of shoes?
My go-to pair of shoes are my Nickels shoes I got 2 years ago for $5.  I love that I can slip them on with socks so then they always get worn on the weekends with jeans. I wear them with dress pants all winter (except this winter when I forced myself not to put them in my 30 for 30).  They are really starting to get worn out  so I bought a new pair of similar shoes but are winged tipped but I still fall back on sliding these shoes on.

2. What goes into your shoe buying decisions?
Color, comfort, height of heel, price tag (in that order)
I guess seeing it in person goes into it since I never order shoes online. I guess I could for some brands that I already own a few pairs of at home and the size fits consistently.

3. The majority of the shoes in your closet are what color?
Oh this was is so hard. I only keep 1 heel in each color that I wear and 1 flat if I can find a flat. I have some older shoes I haven't gotten rid of yet and I have a few of my little bootie things so I'd say black but I actually need to buy black pumps so this question isn't that telling of that.

4. When it comes to design shoes what are your favorite brands and why?
I like Connie because they always fit consistently and they sell them in stores near me.  I like Mudd boots because the calf fits my calf.

5. If price wasn’t an issue, you’d own which shoe?
I have no idea. If you see above price is the 4th thing I look at.  But if expensive shoes were in stores near me that'd be another story. I feel like I have to try shoes on because I have so many foot issues and I do not want to get uncomfortable shoes.
In addition to the questions, here is what my closet looks like.  I have shoes on all three walls in my closet.
The left column shows my shoes in October. On the right were my shoes this morning. If a pair of shoes are not in the closet (aka they are on my floor somewhere) the box is on the floor of my closet so a few pairs are missing.  You can tell I got more shoes recently.   The newest shoes always go in the boxes on the furthest to the left. Also the stack is what shoes I bought on a particular day or on 2 dates close to each other.  The older shoes don't have specific stacks like that since I get rid of shoes and only keep certain ones.

Now tell me about your shoes. How do you organize them? What color do you have the most of? What are your go-to shoes and why?

12:31:41 AM - i stayed up too late.

Tuesday 5/3/11 - Long Day

Dress: Kohl's - June 2010 - $25
Cardigan: NY&Co. - November 2010 - $20
Shoes: Famous Footwear - Spring 2010 - $20
Necklace: Sears - May 2011 - $12
Earrings: Target - April 2011 - $5

I am not wearing pantyhose here. I did not wear them the first hour of the work day. But after going to PT, I put them on. I left for PT at 8 and returned before 10.  I decided it wasn't worth spending the time getting them off for PT. I also didn't want to risk rushing to put them on and off and then cause a runner.

I realized when looking at the pictures that I'm not a fan of the light blue. I wish I wore a bright color. I even have brighter colors. There's always next time.
I went outside to take my daily pictures and there could have been people seeing me. So I hid behind the pillar and used my remote to take pictures of Dave and my neighbor leaving.   Then I took my pictures.  I got to work earlier than normal and it wasn't as bright. The pictures don't look as good at this time of day.
My lunch was leftover chicken and corn from Monday night.  It was good but was not enough so between meetings I ran and bought some combos. I ate a ton of them.

For dinner I went to Siba and ate so much lasagna that my stomach hurt.

I didn't take a single picture of Poly. Some of you may have thought I just didn't include them but I didn't take any. Poor Poly. She probably felt neglected.

I worked from 7-8 then 10-7 then another hour at home. It was a long day. I was exhausted.  I was waiting up because I may have had to approve something for work by midnight. But I only had to approve it if the people before me approved it. Luckily I got the word that it wouldn't happen so I could go to sleep. Usually I'm up late (like tonight) but last night I was really exhausted.

4th PT visit (5.3.11)

Today was my 4th PT visit. It was the 2nd time I've had Mike as the Physical Therapist.

It went better since I decided I'm not running the marathon or the half and that I might not listen to the physical therapists.

I was told I can run every other day, but to only increase my mileage by .25 each time I run. So if you are trying to do the math by the time I would have had to run the marathon (26.2 miles), I'd be up to running 3.5 miles.
I should also do the stretches everyday.
I shouldn't lift for my legs on my own. If I was lifting every other day I'd only lift 1-2 more times a week so only lifting at PT is OK with me.
All the physical therapists have told me my strength is good but that just makes me want to lift more so it doesn't just end up mediocre.
Mike said the best place to run is a track (the last lady told me a track was the worst place to run).

I went to work for an hour then went to PT and totally changed. I was so sweaty after that the entire back of my shirt was all sweaty. I don't sweat that much at the gym.

The thing is I keep forgetting to run so I've taken a few days off.

4.24 - Easter

I never even got dressed. I had a long to-do list but around 11am I started watching TV.  At 3 or so I realized I wasted my day and didn't do anything on my to-do list but instead of getting up, I figured I already wasted my day so I might as well waste the rest of it. 16 hours later I was done watching TV and went to sleep. I ate meals while watching TV. Poly hung out with me most of the day.
I sit on my chair too much. I left a butt print.

11:44:06 AM - @angelineevans my old legg's 2 pack lasted me 3+ years with 2 wears a week for over a yr. Used to be good. Now .5 wears a pair :(

10:06:26 PM - @stinachristina how many calories did you burn?
10:48:07 PM - @stinachristina off the body is a nice thing. I probably only burned that many a dozen or so times. I didn't even upload mine today.

4.25

Pants: VS $44, 2009.  These pants are awful. They are stiff and look huge. They don't photograph well.  I have awesome VS pants and cool VS pants and I never know what I'm ordering. The descriptions aren't good enough on the website. Also all my VS pants are $36 inseam yet these had to be hemmed 1.5 inches.
Shirt and Cardigan: Kohl's - March 18, 2011 $25 and $12
Necklace: Kohl's, $16, 2009
This shirt has a size zipper but it is a little big and I don't need to unzip it. They didn't have a smaller size and since it is flowy I figured a larger size is OK.
I tried to take pictures with my legs apart like so many other style bloggers. They didn't turn out too bad. I mean the pants still look awful. These pants were freshly ironed and you can't tell at all.

I don't like these cardigans anymore. I didn't realize how bad they look unbuttoned. I need to see how they wash to find out if I'm really disappointed though.
Poly was cute before work. She didn't even bother my clothes.  I was tired and got to work a little later than normal.  I functioned surprisingly well at work for being so tired.
I stayed up too late.

I'm so behind on posting I linked this up with an outfit from a few weeks ago. Sorry.

A Day's Worth of Twitter

02:53:16 PM - I bought necklaces at Sears http://bit.ly/kVvbQS

You can find me as @smilincolleen on Twitter.

New Necklaces (5.1)

Last week I went to the mall and failed at finding colorful necklaces. This time I wanted to make sure I went to Sears because of the luck I had last year when I couldn't find red necklaces anywhere else.
I bought 8 new necklaces for $56.67 (counting tax)
So many necklaces = tangled mess
$7.20 - Originally $12 - 40% off
This was the first one I saw so I kept looking.
$2.99 (Clearance. originally $12)
$4.99 - clearance - originally $20
$.99 - clearance  for $1.99 but ended up even cheaper - originally $20
$4.99 - clearance - originally 18
$9 - 40% off - originally $15
$12 - 40% off - Originally $20  (Can be worn long or doubled up)
$10.20 - 40% off - originally $18

Total would have been $135. I would never bought them all at full price. I might have purchased 1 or 2.  There were quite a few there that looked identical to the ones at Target but they were not labeled as nickel free and they were a different brand. I have noticed that Target and Kohl's have had the same earrings before but some were labeled as nickel free and some weren't.

Have you gotten any good deals lately?  I'm happy about my deals.  Which necklace is your favorite?

May Spotlight - Melissa

Well it's that time again... that time to spotlight another awesome blogger. For my sixth feature, I thought I'd ask Melissa some questions. I've emailed Melissa and we just talk about random stuff. It is great. I love the communication and helpfulness. That's what made it easy to choose her for my next feature.

Where did the name of your blog come from?
When I first started reading style blogs, I noticed there weren’t very many that had “mom” somewhere in the title, or “working”. I really wanted to find some that were specifically geared toward working moms just so that I could relate a little bit more. Since A Working Mom’s Closet wasn’t already taken and it’s what I would’ve looked for myself, I decided to use it. J

When did you start your blog? Have you ever had any other blogs before?
I started almost a year ago; my first blog birthday is coming up soon! I kept another blog that was more about my quest to lose weight.

What is the main goal of your blog?
To inspire, to be inspired; to encourage and be encouraged. To learn, to grow; to form relationships and be a part of the wonderful community of style bloggers.

Did the intent or content of your blog change since you started?
I don’t think so. My photos have improved as I’ve learned more throughout the year, but otherwise I think it’s been consistent.

How many hours per week would you say you spend blogging?
Not enough. J I used to have more time to work on my blog but it seems as though life and work have gotten busier.

Do you spend more time reading blogs than you do writing your own blog?
Same as above; I used to have LOTS of time to read and comment on other blogs and at that point yes, I would spend hours upon hours reading blogs while only spending an hour or two writing my own. Now, however, it’s been all I can do just to write my own blog. I rarely have any time to read and comment and I miss my bloggy friends so very much!

How many blogs do you read on a daily basis?
Oh gosh…well, like I wrote above, I don’t have time to read on a daily basis anymore but I’m subscribed to a LOT. I typically have 100-200 unread posts come into my reader each day.

How do you find the time to comment on so many of the blogs that you read?
When I had the time, I was doing it at work. My boss at that point was only working part-time and there wasn’t much work to get done so I had lots of time throughout the day to read and comment. In my new position, there’s quite a bit more work which is good professionally, but that means I don’t have as much time to read. I try to do it while I’m home but my work hours are crazy and when I’m home my priority is time with my daughter when it’s my custody time with her.

Do people email you often because they read your blog?
Nope, not really. J I try to respond to comments via email as often as possible but I don’t get many direct emails from readers.

Do you communicate with a lot of your readers via email/IM?
Only via email in response to comments. I don’t use IM very much so not really that way, but I communicate via twitter too. Email is my favorite though.

What is your inspiration?
I have lots of different inspirations. For life in general, my daughter is my inspiration. For fitness, my ex-husband and my daughter. For fashion, I’m inspired mostly by all of my blog friends!

From the past six months, what is your favorite outfit that you’ve worn (and photographed)?
Ooooh, that’s a tough one. I have several favorites, some casual and some professional. I liked the outfit from this post because the purple dress always makes me feel like a million bucks, I can wear it with any type of belt and it’s fabulous. I liked it this way with the white belt, blue accents and floral flats because I felt entirely appropriate for the baby shower I attended.

What is your favorite picture (of you, others, or scenery) that you have taken recently?
My favorite recent pictures include my daughter, but I don’t post her photo publicly so I won’t show those. I don’t take pictures of scenery often. Coming up with a favorite photo of myself isn’t an easy task! I honestly can’t think of one that’s a favorite.

What post are you most proud of?  Did it get the most hits?
This is another hard one. I think the one I’m most proud of is this one about why I didn’t participate in the Friend Friday blog awards. It was a difficult post for me to write; I opened up about a few aspects of myself and I explained why I was going against the grain. I’m a people pleaser and typically like to do what everyone else is doing so that I fit in, but I was convicted about my reasons for not participating and felt I really needed to explain them. I lost someone that I thought was a good blog friend and the whole experience was a lesson for me. I’m not sure if it got the most hits, but I’m proud of myself for posting it.

What is your daily routine regarding your blog? (Ex: When do you take pictures? When do you upload them? When do you write the post?)
This stays just between us, right? (Heh.) I take my photos right before I leave the house for work. I upload them at the office typically right after our morning meeting (we have one every.single.day.) and write the post then too, if I can.

How do you handle keeping up with posting outfits on the day you actually wore them?
Well…as long as there is time for me to get it done at work, it hasn’t really been an issue. Seriously, this stays between us, right? J

How do you juggle all your competing priorities and still have time to blog?
I blog at work. For the most part. For special features and things like my Proper Professional interviews, I work on those while my daughter is still asleep in the mornings or during her naps or after she’s gone to bed. My blog priority is to keep up with posting in the first place, then to keep any commitments I’ve made in regard to guest posts or features, and then to make sure I respond as often as possible to reader comments (which I like to do via email because it’s more personal, but I can really only do it when the email address is connected to the writer’s comment profile). My main competing priority is my daughter and that is NO competition. Hence the reason I don’t do more or comment more. My daughter comes first. Always.

What is your best tip to photographing yourself and not making yourself look short?
Wait…I don’t look short? Well I honestly have no idea how that happens. I am short and kind of take pride in that, so I don’t really do anything to make it appear otherwise. J

Do you find it difficult to workout in the morning before work all the time?
YES. I wake up at 4:30am. I’d have to go to bed at 8:30 to get a full night’s sleep (actually even earlier because 9 hours would be better).  However, I end up staying up until 9:30 or 10 and don’t get enough sleep so the next morning I’m exhausted and YES it’s hard to work out when I’m exhausted. But I do it. Which leads us to…

What motivates you to keep up with the exercise?
The fact that I’ve been overweight most of my life and I know what that feels like. I don’t like it. It makes me uncomfortable and unhealthy and unenergetic. The fact that I see my daughter wanting to be just like me, but I want her to be like the healthy me, not the unhealthy one that never works out and doesn’t eat well. I want her to be proud of me and I want to be a good example for her.

What is one interesting fact you’d like to share about yourself?
During the Christmas season, I work a side job with an entertainment company singing Christmas music. My absolute favorite gig was singing with my ex-husband and other friends at Disney as the group The Mistletones. If I could sing and blog for a living, I would do that in a heartbeat.

If you haven't done so already, head on over to see what Melissa has to say at A Working Mom's Closet.
