3.13

Poly watched me take my daily picture.

I was so busy at work. Dave and I went to DiBella's for lunch but I took my packed lunch and ate it there. We bought cookies. I ate a bunch then took the rest to my group at work.

I was supposed to give training at 2.  Around 1 PM it got changed to 3 pm.  At 2:55, I finally finished looking at the slides.  It was the first time I gave the training in 3 years.  Most of the slides were new.

After work Dave wanted to go for a walk but I ended up having to get too much done so we didn't have time. We had an NA-YGN officers team building event at 6pm.  We had dinner and did team trivia. It was fun but boy did it go late.  I got home after 10:30 PM. I was so tired.

50k Professional Photos

I guess when you run 6 laps, you get more than one professional photo.

I missed the photographer on lap one because I was wearing the long sleeve shirt over my number. I tried to lift it up to show him but it was a little too late. He said he'd get me next lap but he didn't know I wanted a million pictures.
My stride and speed were still pretty normal after lap 2 (picture 1)
I remember not wanting to hold my water after the station because the picture would have us with our cups.  Yes that is what I thought about.
I don't even remember the picture with Jen. I guess I was being being dead or talking.
I do remember seeing the photographer when I was going in to finish. I also saw him in the background of the picture Sarah took. I wished he would have taken 2-3 each time like I did when I took professional photos, but then I'm sure other people don't want a million pictures of themselves running.

I wish I was like everyone else. If I was less obsessed with pictures, I'd have a lot more free time on my hands.

I really liked how the photographer stood in slightly different places each lap so the background wasn't exactly the same.  Take a look at the rest of the photos. They are interesting to see.  The ones of the blisters make mine seem like nothing.

I also posted about the race the race already.

3.18.12

Shirt: F21, Necklace: Lia Sophia, Jeans: Express
I woke up and started analyzing data again and trying to write my blog post on my race. I took little breaks to check email and read facebook.

From 12-4, I stood in front of Walmart collecting money and food for the local food bank.

I got home and had dinner. Dave and I watched TV.  Then I watched TV and typed my blog post until 11:30 PM except the short walk Dave and I took just before dark.  Boy was I tired so it made typing the post seem to take forever.
I was watching Royal Pains while typing my post and every time I looked up, they had on colored jeans.  The jeans look so nice and colorful but I'm scared of color.

12:46:54 AM - Half the Stampin' Up class is planned.
01:24:35 PM - An ambulance is parked but not in a spot. Later we learn it was so he could get a good wireless signal.
03:18:31 PM - @MarnieCarlson it was at 5 guys
03:21:42 PM - In the past 24 hours 2 people asked me why my calendar ate with my daily picture isn't updated with all of March.
05:24:28 PM - @MarnieCarlson thanks. When did you see me?
05:35:59 PM - @MarnieCarlson h. That is last week. A bit behind. Date is in the title though.
07:31:00 PM - @mikecherepko I'd like pink pants or purple. That is what they wore on Royal pains. Also yellow. But I'm scared. I need patterned shirts.
11:04:17 PM - Well I have an 8:30 meeting with my vp that I'm not ready for (I didn't get the necessary updates from others)
11:05:26 PM - And then I have my final performance review right after that and I haven't written up a thing yet. #notgood
11:06:21 PM - Also I didn't workout again today. I'm such a slacker. Granted my knee is still bad but there are other things to do. Sigh x 10

3.12

I woke up and was tired. I don't like changing the clocks in the spring because I'm so tired.  But then I do like it because I like having more daylight after work. Too bad it's not a win win.
I worked. I was extremely busy.  I went to Body Pump at 5. I wasn't going to go but Jen kept asking me and then I asked Dave if I should go and he said yes.  My knee hurt pretty bad from my run with Kelly. Going down the stairs felt the worst.  I went to pump anyway and I just used lighter weights for the leg tracks.  I impressed myself at class when the instructor was going over the moves for the chest track and I thought based on the moves and the combo that the song was Right Round. Go me. First of all I don't ever know any music ever and then for me to be able to know what song based on the moves is even more of a shocker. We did a mix of old releases and I was shocked that 3 (at least) of the 10 songs were the same as what Kelly had done the previous week. They probably each know 10 more more tracks and so it was just odd to pick the same ones.

Jen and I stood and talked for probably a good 20 minutes after pump.  We have to talk when we can anymore because we never eat lunch together and we're so busy that we don't IM at work.

After all that, I went to a few stores to do some errands. I went to Staples, Lowe's, and Target.
I feel like I got home so late.  I left Target after 7pm.

I ate leftover tuna noodle casserole for dinner. We watched TV.

I wanted to go to sleep at 8:30 but watched TV and blogged a bit until after 11. Then I was really tired. Dave made a comment when he went into bed at 11:15 that I was waiting until he went to sleep. He was right. I feel like if I go in to sleep before him I'm going to sleep way too early no matter the time. Sometimes he falls asleep at 8:30 so if I went to sleep before him that'd be accurate. But then other times he's up past 11:30. (We're old so 11:30 is late on a work night.)

06:03:16 PM - oh man am I starving. I think I may leave work and go home to eat then work again.
09:58:22 PM - I feel like I need to attempt a longer ultramarathon now. I feel like 50k isn't that long. Any suggestions?

Predictions for the 50k

Prior to the race, I put together a plan heavily based on my 20 mile race.  I broke it down by mile but I have  it basically summarized above by loop.

As I mentioned in my long race recap, auto pause was on my watch so the Garmin data was much shorter.

I made up my plan for the race so my pacers knew when to arrive. I thought everything was fast estimates.  Well it looks like it wasn't.  I'm actually surprised the last lap was so slow because it didn't have a water stop at the end and only had the stop at the spigot and the stop at the water stop.

I find it a little bit insane how close my actual time was compared to my predicted time. I was actually faster in the earlier laps and slower in the later laps but it all evened out.  I probably felt a lot worse near the end because I went so fast at the beginning though.

If I had done anything close to what any training plan suggested, perhaps I could have kept up the pace from laps 1, 2, and 3.

Have you ever tried to predict a race time? How close have you been? I think being 49 seconds off in a race over 5 hours is pretty close. Closer than I could ever guess.
Official results: 5:21:10

An Ultramarathon - 50k (3.17.12)

About a minute after I finished.
I ran a 50k.  I only told a couple people about it.  I didn't think I'd finish it so I didn't want everyone knowing about it. I wasn't even 100% sure I'd start the race.  Plus I feel a lot more pressure when I know people know I'm doing it.  My better races have been ones people didn't know about. I think I was more nervous the time I paced Callie in her ultramarathon than in this race.

Overall, I was ahead of my schedule which was really way ahead of my anticipated time. It was really hot. I dumped water on my head for the first time in my life. (I also dumped it on my head for the 5th time in my life.) Not only did I run my first ultramarathon in my life but I also ran it on an injured knee.

Anything over the distance of a marathon is considered an ultramarathon. A marathon is 26.2 miles and a 50k is 31.1 miles. The furthest I ever ran before today was 26.2 miles. The 2nd furthest was 20.22 miles.

My goal for the race was to finish before the cutoff of 7 hours. Officially I got 5:21:10. My best possible "plan" had me finishing at 5:21:59.  I mentioned that my plan was entirely too fast and there was no way I'd finish that fast.  I was pretty close.  At the start of the race, we were told there were 75 runners, 20 of which were female. The youngest was 22 and the oldest was 69 but there were 4 69-year olds. I came in 41st overall ( and was 43rd going into the last lap as seen in the lap results).

3.8

(Dave told me I looked fat in this outfit but maybe it's the 6 lbs I gained in 10 days.)
Earlier in the week I thought they wouldn't be bad but as the week went on, my calendar got booked solid. I don't know how it happened but meetings all day mean I can't get real work done.

I ate lunch at my desk and worked. That was the only spare time I had. I only had time during lunch because I skipped a meeting. The meeting I skipped was the only optional meeting and the only fun meeting. Ahh well.

Then at 4:30 I was finally done with meetings and Jen came over to visit. We talked for almost an hour. It makes up for us never having lunch anymore.
I was going to go to the gym after work and then go to PiYo at the other gym.  Well I didn't go to the gym and just went to 5 Guys on the way home.  Then Dave tricked me knowing my addiction for Dexter and then I missed going to PiYo too.  Then I don't even get to watch Dexter until midnight. He even wanted to stop after 1 episode which was just shortly after the class at the gym started.

We did watch 3 episodes of Dexter. I want to watch more. Between each episode Dave wastes many minutes just telling me we aren't watching more. He just tortures me and wastes time then wonders why 3 episodes take up so much time.

After watching Rachel, Dave went up to bed. I decided to watch Biggest Loser. I was falling asleep near the end of it but still watched Cougar Town when that was over.  Then I watched the rest of Unforgettable that I had started a few days earlier. Well now I was getting awake so I watched One Tree Hill and then 90210 after that. I finally went up to bed at 1:45 AM.

3.7 - Car Battery

I want more blazers like this. Well I want more similar but would prefer the sleeves to be longer and there not to be shoulder padding.
I telecommuted.
At lunch we pushed my car out of the garage so we could jump it on the street. We headed to Advanced Auto Parts to get a new battery. Then hit up Wendy's on the way home. I had a frosty in addition to food. No wonder I've gained 6 lbs in the past 10 days.

After work, I went to Body Pump.  I used extremely low weights for squats and lunges because of my knee. I was shocked how easy the rest of the class seemed with my normal weights. I guess the slight break for the 2 leg tracks really helped out.  On the shoulder track I used more weight for overhead presses than I've used in probably 1.5 years.
We watched more Dexter and then Rachel Maddow.  I never get enough Dexter in.  Once we got caught up on our recording for Rachel, I went upstairs to watch it and work. I had to work to prep for meetings since I didn't have any time the following day.  I ended up watching Rachel, Lawrence, and Ed. I worked far too long.

A Day's Worth of Twitter

08:06:42 AM - @BodyMedia I'm too scared to do interviews I was just curious what specifically you were looking for in a user.
08:07:15 AM - @TheNewChrissy Glad it didn't last long. If you had class and work at the same time it'd last longer.
08:00:00 PM - Jen and I took 1499 pictures today of each other running.
08:01:09 PM - @lisafilipek Well you hold the button and it keeps taking them so we didn't even know how many we'd end up with. Still waiting to look at em
08:39:55 PM - @MarnieCarlson we ran at North Boundary Park. Ran 1 loop prior to taking pictures then 1 loop with picture taking.
09:09:22 PM - @mikecherepko that ziti is far too much work.
09:12:34 PM - @BodyMediaFIT outside, gym, then home. Home is too distracting for a great workout
09:21:13 PM - @missylizzylucy I feel the same about my hips. Good luck at your race.

2.38 miles + pictures (3.15)

Today Jen and I met at North Boundary Park. This is our first time running there together. Jen has run there twice before and I've walked there twice but never the full loop. Also, both of us were there only once with the loop paved how it currently is.

The loop is 1.1 miles long. Well my Garmin said 1.07 mi after the first loop. We ran the first loop clockwise and before running the second loop we got my camera.  We took quite a few shots of us running before getting back on the path. Our Garmins were off for this data but it was at least enough to make the run 2.5.

The second loop was a lot more interesting. We ran it counterclockwise. We were trying to see which way was harder to run.

During the second loop, we stopped 4 or so times to take pictures. One of us would run ahead with the camera and take pictures of the other coming down. Then the person who took pictures first would run back to get more pictures.  It was pretty interesting. Sometimes it got crowded and we had to wait until people were out of site.  Looking at the data you can tell all the stops and starts.  You can also see the path doubling back on the route map.  Sometimes auto pause wouldn't even start back up until after the short run that was being photographed.

Jen's Garmin said 2.34 and mine said 2.38 but we both got 9:17 pace which was actually quite interesting since we ran separately each time we took photos.

I have so many more ideas for photos but most probably won't ever happen. I can't wait until my legs aren't quite so pale.  Also if we took my good camera, the pictures would be a lot less crisper but then we wouldn't have ran the 2nd loop with it. That's why I like having multiple cameras. I usually have one to fit any occasion.

These few pictures were between the loops.  I can't wait to go back when all the leaves are on the trees.
All photos of Jen were taken by me and all photos of me were taken by Jen.
Just for fun I changed a few settings in picasa to see what it would do to some of the pictures. I didn't do it to many. Just looking at all 1499 pictures took over an hour.
When we ran the first loop there were horses right near this fence. I was disappointed that they weren't close by on the 2nd loop. Or maybe I should be disappointed that I didn't have my camera on my first loop.  About a quarter mile past this there were cows but they were a little far from the path so I couldn't figure out how to get a picture with them.
I put a small percentage of the pictures we took on my picasa so please check them out. Three photo shoots in 5 days. Pretty impressive (insane).  I probably took more pictures today than people do in their entire lifetime.

1.41 mi (3.14)

I went out to run at lunch. I was only going to do a mile. I set out to run at a 9:00 pace. After my 3rd split (that I hit right at 2:15), I realized that I needed to run an 8:30 pace because last time I ran the loop at home I said that next time I ran it, I'd have a goal of 8:30. So of course I had to speed up to make up the time. Luckily I was playing Bonus Seconds* and could redo my goal and figure do it right.

I ran 1.53 mi last time with the same route as this time with 1 exception. Last time I looped around Horizon Court and then on Ambassador Lane. This time I ran down my street and then on Ambassador. I turned around early on Ambassador this time because a lady was having trouble controlling her dog at the end so I turned around earlier to make it easier on her.

I didn't end up picking up my pace until .75 miles in. I did have some bonus seconds but my 4th .25 split was 1:54 so that helped things out.  If you look at the  pace chart you can tell that I ran faster starting a little over halfway through. You can also see the spot that I turned around. I hate turning around because of the data.

After I ran and stopped my timer, I was well ahead of my 8:30 goal. Go me. I couldn't have kept it up much longer but at least I did it for what I set out to do. So much for an easy mile in 9 minutes. I should have been resting for my knee.  It ended up being more effort on speed than it should have.  When I came inside, Dave asked what I just did and I said said how I ran. He told me I wasn't allowed. I'm so bad at this rest thing.
After I was done running I ran inside and got my camera. I set up the timer and got some pictures of me running. None are even that good but what do you expect from self photography while running in harsh sun just in front of my house.
I got some pictures of me from an angle. Next time I'll try straight on. I won't really be able to pull off from the side but maybe if I run on the other side of the street. My neighbors probably think I'm the weirdest person.
Some of these pictures I thought were the same until I analyzed my ponytail.
I wonder what my most flattering running outfit is.  Most of the time I don't even match. I have these teal/greenish shorts and I wear them with whatever tank top is on top.

What do you think would be a good athletic picture? I need some ideas.

*Bonus Seconds is the game I play. As I run each .25 I get my split. Before I run I set a goal. The goal was 9 minute miles so 2:15 was my goal.  Therefore if I finished a .25 lap in 2:12, I would get 3 bonus seconds.  The next lap, I may get 2;16 so I would have to subtract one of my bonus seconds from the previous lap.  You hate to end up with negative. Those are penalty seconds in my book.  This game makes running so much more fun. People told me not to do it in the marathon. I tried to not do it and it sucked so I started doing it. Sometimes if you get so many bonus seconds, you just start over.  Or if you are running a 2.5 mile loop twice, I start it over at the 2.5 mile mark. I also run with my goal changing. The first 5 miles may be a 9 minute pace but then I switch to a 9:30 pace so my goal splits change but I may or may not start over.   Does anyone else play weird games like this when they run? (My watch has a pace feature that I don't use. One time I decided to check it out. I had 22 bonus seconds and I clicked the button and it told me I was 22 seconds ahead of pace. I trusted the watch after that.  Funny I didn't say I trusted my own math. I knew my own math was good.)

I carpooled with Dave again.  I realized how much I like it. I don't have to drive. I also am forced to get ready in a jiffy. I actually was only able to time it closely because Dave showered in the morning and I didn't. If I did, I'd have to wake up earlier than him. If he didn't, I'd have to wake up earlier than him.

I get to work early when we carpool too. But then I might not get to leave 9 hours later anyway. I never leave early.

Dave and I went to the gym after work. We both talked about how we kind of wanted to skip but we didn't.
We watched some Dexter after work.  I don't know what I did with my life before Dexter. I don't know what I'll do with my life after Dexter too.

02:36:54 PM - I'm just eating lunch now. I ate so much last night that I wasn't even hungry. Last night I had pizza + 2 desserts.
11:19:58 PM - It is too hot this March. I'm afraid this means the summer will be unbearable.
11:23:55 PM - @TheNewChrissy it is even worse to be sick when you have class so spring break is the lesser of 2 evils

3.11 - Food, Run, Poly, Pictures

I double slept in. I slept longer than on a normal Sunday but then I slept later because we changed the clocks.
Dave finally got me out of bed by saying he was cooking breakfast.  I cleaned up a bit while he cooked.  The breakfast was too salty so I only ate 1/3 or so of it.
Poly was helping even if it was dangerous.
Then we started putting up light fixtures.  After changing the 2 in both closets we learned that turning off the power to all the bedrooms did not turn off the power to the closets. I'm surprised I'm not dead.
Our closets have the 2 new light fixtures that are slightly smaller than the fixtures that used to be in there.  A while ago we had swapped 1 closet fixture with a keyless one that was in the master bedroom.
We moved the other closet fixture into the spare room.
You can tell Poly was the priority not actually installing lights.
We headed to Target to buy another slightly bigger fixture. When we got there we realized why we hadn't bought them yesterday; They were sold out.  So that was a wasted trip.  We also hit up a few stores trying to find sunglasses cases and we failed.  We got Wendy's though. I had a tasty vanilla Frosty.

We had to hurry home so I could change and go meet Kelly to run.  I got within 10 minutes of being there and realized I forgot my garmin.  I drove 3 more minutes then realized there was no way I could run 10 miles without my Garmin so I turned around.  I called Kelly to let her know I'd be late.  She was slightly late but I was still way later.  I told her to get started and I'd park in a different lot.  She probably still waited for me a little bit but at least she didn't wait 10 more minutes.  The thing is getting to the other lot required waiting at 1 red light once and another one 3 times. She ran an extra half mile or more in that time.

With the high speed burst on the camera setting you get a lot of pictures. It's pretty neat.
As soon as I was done running, I headed home only to come inside and get water and then head out to Adam's Township Community Park to walk with Dave and also force him to take a few pictures of me running.  I looked terrible from running 10 miles in the heat today.  I was smiling in the pictures because I was so happy I talked Dave into taking some.  He didn't take them on my good camera but I still knew they'd turn out good.  The park was very nice and there is some path between trees. It makes for some good pictures.  I actually wished I talked him into taking pictures at more than 3 locations. I also wish he took some a little from the side instead of straight on. But I guess I can't have everything.
Once we got home, I cooked dinner. I showered just in time for the timer to be going off. We watched TV while we ate and then we watched more TV.  I did a load of laundry while we watched TV. Dave fell asleep at 9:30 (which should feel like 8:30 to him).  Once he went to bed, I went up to my computer to mess with pictures and upload the race pictures I took. It was nothing but trouble.  Before I knew it, it was 2:00 AM.

All of the recent times I wore green were exercise outfits. So I just chose this day to use for Everybody Everywear. Not the most fashionable though.

Green | Everybody, Everywear

Dave and I went to breakfast and then to the gym. It took a lot of restraint to not run on the treadmill.
There was a wait at breakfast so I did some shopping first. Above are the things I tried on.  I didn't buy anything though.  Dave liked the blue shirt and I did like the skirt in the bottom right. Everything in the store was buy one get one half price.  Since our wait was over, I didn't buy anything and thought I'd go back after breakfast.  I forgot so I ended up with nothing.  I don't like how most of the dresses are above the knee.  They aren't work appropriate that way.

We went to Giant Eagle after bought ingredients for stuffed peppers. We didn't buy food for any other meals though.  We still spent $150 though.

We watched a lot of TV. I used to have to-do lists but I don't even think about them anymore.  I'll think about it again once I'm all caught up on Dexter.

I got to work early to be able to leave early. Afterall it is Friday so I should only work 8 hours too.

Well I didn't leave early.  I had enough time to go to the gym and then go straight to Studio Fit for Body Pump.  I didn't have enough time to run for that long though. I ran for 1.25 miles (in 11:40) and then did leg exercises good for my knee. I didn't have time to do foam roller but figured I could do that at home if need be.
