Sweater: VS (worn over athletic tank)
Jeans: Express
Boots: Gifted (but from JCP)

Dave
Pants: Target
T-shirt: Casual Male XL

This is what we both work to McGuinnis Sisters to buy food.

Dave and I stayed in bed until lunch. We watched TV and used our laptops.  Then we watched West Wing and ate lunch.  Then watched In Treatment.  I napped.   We went to McGuinnis Sisters to buy ingredients for a roast and for macaroni and cheese.  We got pizza at McGuinnis Sisters but the lady put on 4x too much cheese on it so it was not good. I had a lot of desserts after because of that.   We watched more In Treatment.

Look how Poly looks at Dave longingly when he is about to go downstairs.
Then I used the exercise bike for 30 minutes and tried to do abs.  Poly did not cooperate. I took a break and figured out how to upload my youtube video then I did abs for real.  I watched The Mentalist and Unforgettable while exercising and then sat in bed.

Poly was tickling my feet. Just looking at the picture makes my feet all ticklish.
I ate all the dirt. It was so good.
I am showing off one of my new pins.

I hit snooze again. I was exhausted.  This tooth ache is really cramping my sleeping style.

It took me far too long to get ready. Perhaps one reason is I remembered about the cookies and cream bark in the freezer that was only supposed to be in there 1 hour. So I was trying to break that. It really takes a long time when you are in a hurry. If you just do it when you watch TV it feels like it takes no time at all.
Leaving the house I put my hat on for the 2nd time and the ball fell off. :(

I finally called the dentist. I got an appointment on Monday, January 9.  They think it just needs sanded down a bit.  Who knows.  I talked to a coworker and she said I must grind my teeth and that's why the pain wakes me up in the middle of the night. I do grind my teeth. I ground through retainers back when I wore them so I know it's bad.  The orthodontist said she never saw a retainer get so bad so quickly like mine did.

At the end of the work day, I did a lot of talking. That's the opposite of productivity. Then I had to rush out to meet Dave at the gym. I was late. He already did cardio. He did cardio longer than he wanted so he didn't want to do weights. It was a big ordeal and annoying.  I ran 1.6 miles and left to pick up dinner at On the Border. He was already on the way home/home by the time of this. I had only run 4 minutes by the time he was done.
We watched some TV and I typed up the shopping list for everything we need for the party. (Poly tried to type too.  She's always helping.)  I didn't put it in order though.  I did separate it by store.  I cleaned up a little. I did some dishes. Then it was time for bed.  I feel like I should have had more time in the evening but the time just disappears.

12.23

This is how cleaning happens.  The top picture is what happens in the process of cleaning but then I quit.  Then later I just throw it on the floor again when it's time for bed.
We went grocery shopping but did it all wrong. All liquids after over half of the store.

"I don't have time to eat healthy."

source
That was the theme of this week's Biggest Loser.   I thought it was a pretty good theme.  They didn't seem to focus on it a lot during the show or did but it just didn't sink in my mind.

I often think about how people say they don't have time to eat healthy. They also say healthy foods are more expensive and they can't afford it.  There are so many excuses.

Some things I've noticed are that you can make it part of your routine and you do have the time to eat healthy. You can cook and watch TV.  You can buy healthier options at restaurants.  Most chains put their nutrition information online and some do right on the menu.  You can use that as a start.   You can cook a few meals worth and have containers ready to pack it up and then you have another lunch and dinner without having to cook or spend time going to a restaurant to get food.

source
People saying they don't have time to exercise is also crazy.  I used to think I was so busy and didn't know how I'd fit time in to exercise and here I am exercising 6 days a week.

Eating right and exercising make you have more energy. Then you do everything else better or faster in your life. It may seem like you are taking more time to cook or buy the appropriate ingredients but all the time evens out in the end.

Now here's the kicker. I know all of the above. Yet I still pick up dinner on the way home from work and sit there and watch TV.  All of this is a lifestyle change and working out more than 4 days a week has been part of my life since early 2009. So I'd say I've stuck with it pretty long. Late 2008, I also exercised daily but just knee exercises for my bad knee.

Dave, Poly, and I hung out in bed until about 8am.  Usually I would be asleep until 8 or later but Dave set his alarm for 7 and so I was up too.
Then I went to shovel. It took a good 20 minutes and there was only about an inch.
Then it was back to bed to hang out with Poly before I started cleaning.

My day was much busier than I thought. Many people were concerned about the weather for our NA-YGN Holiday Party.   I logged into work and spent far too much time discussing the party and options on the pending snow.  Then I had to meet my parents for lunch.  We left late.  We also made wrong turns like we always do. Haufbrahaus was good.

Then we went to a movie. War Horse was longer than we expected when signing up so I actually didn't get out of there until 5:10.  The holiday party started at 5. Oh boy. The stress.
I got to Dave & Busters at 5:15 and tried to set some things up.  I tried to socialize but I was being being in charge too so that is always stressful. Dave wants me to be with him but I have to do being in charge things.

Even after dinner, he wanted to play games with me but I had to handle some of the additional games we were playing for NA-YGN and then distribute the prizes.

Finally after all that was done, we got to play some fun games. At least everyone else seemed to have fun throughout the night.

We left around 9:40 after cashing in our tickets and having 1957 but wanting to buy nothing. We bought some candy and saved the rest.   It wasn't snowing at all when we left but minutes later started and was snowing the entire way home. We took 79 to 228 instead of taking back roads but thens someone on 228 was going so slow it was annoying. I'd have to brake going up hill which made me think we'd get suck.  After cars between us turned, I learned the culprit had a Florida license plate.

I got out of the car at the road to go up and get my boots and shovel. I was walking up and it seemed good so I thought no big deal and then boom it got bad and I was sliding. So I tried to make it over to the grass to make it up. That was really hard. I failed and ended up fully on my stomach with my hands up near my head kind of blocking my face from hitting the driveway.

We got home and Poly sure missed us. We fed her but she didn't even care. She just wanted to hang out with us.  We went to bed and were using our laptops reading reddit and heard her crying. She had gone downstairs to get some food or something and forgot we were home and cried out of loneliness. Dave called her and said we were here and she never ran up the steps so fast. Poor Poly. Poor Poly forgetting we were home but also Poor her because she probably does this when we aren't home.

We used the computers for a little bit then went to sleep.  It was a tiring day.
I FORGOT TO TAKE MY DAILY PICTURE! But this is what I wore.

I guess it was already the 1st when I went to sleep.  I went to sleep around 5:30 AM.  I set my alarm for 10am. I hit snooze once. I got up. I got ready. I went to take a nap but couldn't because my tooth hurt so much.

Then I hit the road to head home.  I got home and watched In Treatment with Dave.  We ended up watching 2 episodes which didn't work well for my plan. During the first episode Dave wanted to know if I wanted to go to North Park and walk with him. I can never turn him down.
We went and walked but since we watched 2 episodes, I knew I'd be a tiny bit late to Adrienne's.  Well 2.28 (and 2.22) miles from the car a bit storm comes in. We stopped under a pavilion to wait out the storm and sideways rain. Well this put me even more behind schedule.  Plus now that meant I couldn't just go home and change and head out the door.

I was so late. I at least sent a warning text I'd be late.  Man I hate being late. I was so stressed.   I was supposed to arrive at 4 and have us eat at 5 and I arrived at 5. I'm the worst. I hate me. I hate when people are late and I was late.  They told me not to worry about it but I couldn't help myself.  As I was leaving Dave told me to pretend that it starts at 6:30 and I'm early. Like that would ever work!
We had a very nice time. Callie was there.  It was just their family, Callie, and me.  I think Dave would have liked it if it wasn't on at the same time as the Steeler Game.  He didn't go. They said they understood but it is just really annoying that Dave never goes.
We left around 8:45. After I got home, I finally got to analyze my data from my race and run the previous day. I never even look at my mile splits. I've never gone that long without looking at race data. I rarely go that long without looking at normal run data.

I spent so long at my computer that I was exhausted. It was even only midnight.

Jen on Why I Run

Hi everyone!  My name is Jen and I have a blog at http://jenth.blogspot.com.  Colleen asked me about a month ago if I’d be interested in writing down why I run, to add as a post on her blog.  I wanted to wait to get some better race pictures, but now I have them so this is why I run.
I have never been an athlete or into sports at all.  There are some good genes in my family but I didn’t get any of them.  (My sister did, however, and sports have always come naturally to her.  It makes me jealous sometimes.)

I actually joined the track team when I was about 5 years old.  I did it because my best friend at the time was on the team.  I had no idea what track or running really meant.  And as I was joining, she quit.  I didn’t want to be on the team anymore but my parents said you don’t quit things so I had to stick it out for the rest of the year.  I don’t remember much about that but I did get a ribbon for placing in a relay race.  And I remember watching the mile run and thinking that was so far!

Crossing the finish line of my first 5K in April 2011
I never was into running even after that.  I remember dreading the mile run each year in gym class, and I played tennis in high school and also hated any running associated with that.  We used to try to cheat and run less if our coach wasn’t watching.  My first year of tennis I was so sore for a little while as my body got used to the exercise, especially the running.  My hamstrings and calves were so tight!  But that also helped me learn sometimes you push through the soreness and it actually can feel better faster.

Before I go on, I should say that I don’t really consider myself a “real” runner.  I like to go out there and do it but I’m not even close to being competitive and I haven’t been at this for a full year yet.

I started out running as a way to get some exercise in.  I’ve tried other things before.  I did Body Pump (Les Mills) and loved that but it requires a gym membership and there aren’t any gyms close to me or convenient with my busy schedule to consistently attend the classes and make it worth spending the $.  I have EA Active on Wii but don’t really have enough room in our living room right now to spread out and do it.  I also have an exercise bike at home but I have to drag it out each time I use it.  With running, I just throw on some workout clothes and go.  No pulling out heavy equipment (the treadmill is already there) and if I want to run around the neighborhood I just walk out the door.

Crossing the finish line of my first 5K in April 2011 and approaching the finish line at a 5K a few months later.

I started running late February of 2011.  I started solely on my brand new treadmill (birthday present from my husband) and did the Couch to 5K program.  I was about 8 weeks (out of 10) into the program when I ran my first 5k race.  It was downtown Pittsburgh, in April, and the weather wasn’t that great.  This was also my first time running outside, which might have been stupid.  It was cloudy and rainy, and it was cool enough that the rain was coming down pretty cold.  My husband drove me to the race and honestly if he hadn’t gone with me I would have chickened out.  I was so nervous, too!  I ended up walking twice towards the end but finishing with a time of 31:50 and from that point on I’ve been hooked.  I remember saying over and over to my husband- I just ran 3 miles!  I couldn’t believe it.  I was the person who couldn’t even manage a mile in gym class.

I’ve kept running since then and found more reasons that I do like to run.  I originally did it just to get some exercise in but it has been a lot more enjoyable than I ever realized it would be.  These are some of the reasons why:
  • It can be a great stress reliever.  There are a number of times already that I’ve been feeling either really stressed out or emotional and I put on my running shoes and just go.  It helps me so much!  I pound away my frustration or emotion, and those runs are sometimes faster/longer because my mind is on something else and not the run.
  • It’s a nice way to get outside.  There have been some days where I’ve been running and just enjoyed the scenery and being out in the sunshine.  Even sometimes the “bad” weather is nice.  For example, if it’s a hot day, some rain is a relief because it will cool you down.
  • The races are so fun.  It’s such a good feeling at the end of a race to cross that finish line and continue to try to improve your time.  Actually, I should clarify and say that in general training runs themselves just give me a satisfaction when I’m done.
  • I am a loner and running provides some time by myself when I don’t feel obligated to talk but can think through things as much as I want.
  • At the same time, though, I’ve really connected by running with some friends.  It’s a chance to really talk, although I admit most of the time I listen.  I’m not really a big talker while running.  But it’s brought me closer to a few people.  I never expected that when I started running.  Some of my best runs are with a friend, talking the time/miles away.
  • Running is an individual sport.  I can be competitive with myself.  I prefer that over team sports.  I always feel bad if I’m bringing a whole team down, and for some reason I am more competitive on my own/against myself.  There is always a new goal to drive for.
  • I’m an engineer, so yes, I’m a nerd.  And I love crunching numbers.  How many miles did I run this week?  How did it compare to a month ago, six months ago?  What was my pace for this specific run?  What was my fastest .25 mile and my slowest .25 mile?  (I got a Garmin watch for Christmas and that helps so much with tracking all of this!)  Tracking some of this also motivates me and gives me a goal to continuously improve.
I’m sure my list will grow as I keep up the running.  Some of my friends think I’m a little crazy and don’t understand why I run or how I could enjoy it.  I’m not sure if this will help explain it, but I’m surprised myself.  I’m currently training for my first half marathon, and I never would have believed I’d be at this point right now.
About to cross the finish line at Resolution Run

I hit snooze a few times.  I went to work.

I went to the dentist for 11:30.  The guy in the office just thought I'd need my filling sanded down a bit. I didn't believe him. I got there. That wasn't the case. It has to be refilled. Also it's only 50/50 that it will work. Otherwise I'll need a root canal.  My tooth was fine before they started messing with it and well the nerve hated the filling so now I'm in trouble. I warned them about how I was numb for 5+ hours last time and I didn't need that much Novocaine. Well this time they gave me less and it hurt while they were drilling. Then I was still numb for over 3 hours.

As soon as I was back to work, I had to go to Building 3 for a meeting.
Then I had to rush to another meeting. Finally at 2:30 I ate a few crackers.

At 3:30, I got my picture taken. It was a professional photo to use on the recognition screens. I don't think it turned out well.  My face was even still numb from the dentist.
I went to Body Pump at 5. It was the new release. I should make a post about that. It was so hard. The warmup was rough so I knew it'd be bad. I haven't been to Pump since December 21 so I expected it to be hard but not that hard.
I went back to work after and worked past 7:30.  I picked up Jimmy Wan's for dinner and watched TV.  Then I watched more TV.   Then I turned on SNL to fall asleep on the couch while watching it. Well an hour later I woke up to Poly meowing at me. She was telling me to go upstairs and sleep. Well waking up made my tooth hurt so bad. I took Advil and that didn't help.  So I was in bed over an hour trying to fall asleep.  It was awful.  I wish I filled the prescriptions the dentist gave me. Also I guess the filling didn't work.  This tooth gave me no problems before he tried to fill it. I hate him.

I worked far too many hours. Then I went to a 2 hour meeting for NA-YGN planning.  Then I ran on the treadmill after. (I couldn't find my headphones in my gym bag so I had to run without them and that sucked.)  I ran 2.5 miles with a pace of 8:52. I switched up what I normally do on the treadmill. I ran .5 warm-up then stretched (normal), but then I started at 6.0 and each minute moved the treadmill up .2mph.  I got up to 7.4 and then went back down. Once I was back at 6.0 I ran at 7.2 until the next .25 break then ran at 6.6 until I was done.  I then lifted weights.
I came home, and watched some TV.  I went into bed the latest of the previous few nights. I stayed up until 10pm.

I only took 1 picture the entire day of Poly!

It was just barely daylight out and it looks dark. The purple in my skirt and the darker purple in the scarf are the same shade in person. They look totally different here.
Getting ready
I set my alarm like I normally do even though I went to sleep at 8pm.  I ended up hitting snooze just like normal.  I did wake up at 3am and think it was about time to wake up. It wasn't, so I made myself go back to sleep.
Dave was Telecommuting
I ended up getting to work at 7:45 and was so busy. Time flew. I had too many meetings.  I attended Toastmasters for the first time.  I'm not quite sure what I thought of it. It's scary and good at the same time.  But I should do it so maybe it'll be less scary.
(2 names are wrong and they are printing a retraction)
I learned I was "famous" and was pictured in the Pittsburgh Business Times. After I sent the people emails who were in the picture too, I realized there was a caption and the caption was wrong.  Oh boy.

I wanted to go to body pump since I missed my normal Wednesday class and I got sucked into work and a meeting and didn't get to go. So I missed yet again.  It makes me so angry.
Note how different the color of my skirt looks on my iPhone camera
I didn't even end up going to the gym at all and I just worked until after when Body Pump should have been over.  Then I headed home.  I ate dinner and started to fall asleep sitting in the chair.

I did blog a little and read a little and managed to stay up past 9pm.

Why I Blog

I have been blogging daily for over a year and a half. I have been blogging for 8 years (some of that on LiveJournal).  I have slightly changed what all I post about over the years.

I blog for me. It isn't that I don't care about readers. It's not that at all. I love readers. I just mainly blog for me. I think if I blogged for others, I would have lost interest ages ago.  I blog for the chronology of my life. I like to be able to go back a year or two and pick a random day and know what I did.  I know that many people find my life boring, heck I find it boring too, but it is still my life and I still post about it.

Over the past 1.5 years, my favorite blogs have changed. I have started to enjoy some more and some less.  I don't particularly favor a type of blogger over another, other than I enjoy the bloggers who actually post more about their lives. I think this is because I post about my life and that's what I enjoy.  If I didn't write about my boring life, I'd have a post a month if that.  If I blogged only when I had something thoughtful and exciting to write about, that would also be rare.

I blog to share about my life with others. I blog to interest with others. Some of my interactions with people are solely commenting on each others blogs.

I probably blog for all the wrong reasons according to big or famous blogs out there but these seem right for me.  Blogging and getting my thoughts down has been great and I feel like I've been happier over the years after writing things.

Why do you blog? (Or if you don't blog, why don't you?)

1.11

I had to consult my calendar site to figure out what to wear. I was at a loss.  I wore this sweater and shirt before but with a different skirt.

Pants: VS
Shirt: Limited
Cardigan: Target
Belt: Target
Necklace: Lia Sophia
Earrings: Target
Boots: VS

I was pretty proud of this outfit. I have no idea why. I think anyone else would have come up with it. But I was proud because it was different than I originally would have though and I was having difficult deciding what to wear.  Oh the little things in life.  Next to be proud about something at work.
I woke up after an extremely nice sleep.  Who knew taking Vicodin would be so nice.

I went to work. I had far too many meetings.  Meetings ran late. Then I missed Body Pump because I was there too late.   Well since I almost missed Pump, I just kept working.
I took a picture of the training plans pinned to my wall to help me know how many miles I should be running. If only I updated the dates so they still weren't keeping track of a November 20 marathon.

I picked up pizza on the way home.  I watched TV while eating.  Then I went to watch more TV. (I couldn't sit in my normal chair because I had junk all over it so I had to sit on the other couch.) I fell asleep at 8:00 PM.  I woke up 30 minutes later to go upstairs. I was awake a little bit and fell asleep again.

Work + eat + sleep is not how I wanted my day to go.

08:48:29 AM - @BodyMediaFIT When I put on the armband today it made the noise like it was registering. Is there a way to update my email to BMF?

A Day's Worth of Twitter

07:25:10 PM - This treadmill run is going to suck without headphones.
08:37:30 PM - My @BodyMediaFIT sync still isn't working
08:52:44 PM - @BodyMediaFIT It says your hours are only M-F 9-5 :(
08:58:07 PM - @FierceFabFit I did waste 10 minutes digging in my purse and my gym bag looking for the headphones. I could have worked out 10 minutes more.
09:57:44 PM - @BodyMediaFIT I sent an email via contact us. I'll sleep without it on tonight and try to load again tomorrow.
10:04:40 PM - I have so many unread work and personal emails that it is stressing me out.

Dress: Loft (purchased a few months ago, never worn)
Belt: Target
Shoes: JCP
Earrings: Target
Necklace: Sears

This dress was so comfortable
Dave and I made the icing for the apple cake.  I made carrot cookies and the icing.  Gram's recipes are hard to follow.  She didn't have a baking time.  Her amounts for the icing covered about 5 cookies.  Have you ever made icing with orange juice and powdered sugar before?  I have now.   1 cup of powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon of orange juice is not enough and not the right proportion so I started winging it and just dumping it in. That worked out well.
We headed to my parents and Poly did not want to cooperate. She thought she was boss.
Poly really likes her scratching post when we take it to my parents.
I took pictures of the food and room but not of the people.
Around 11pm we started opening presents.  Poly couldn't wait until we got most of the opening done so she could get at the tree skirt. Dave got a lot of clothes for Christmas.   We stayed up far too late. It was about 2 am before we were headed upstairs to sleep.  I had to sleep on the couch because there weren't enough beds for me.
